Changing the World
Paeroa Christian School was established by a small group of Christian parents in 1987. These parents took very seriously God's instruction to be responsible for the education of their children. They wanted to ensure that what their children were being taught at school during the day was the same as what they believed and were taught at home.
The school commenced with a roll of approximately 20 using the Paeroa Gospel Chapel buildings. The school has always had a very broad support basis from all the evangelical churches in Paeroa and the surrounding towns. Today we have a roll of around 50 pupils.
Through the Lord's provision the school was able to buy its own buildings in Coronation Street during the mid 1990s. In 1997 the school became an "integrated" school, meaning the Government took on some financial responsibility for the school while allowing us to keep our special character. As an integrated school we use the Ministry of Education curriculum statements, however the Paeroa Christian School curriculum reflects a Christian Biblical worldview. The fact that Jesus Christ is Lord under girds all of our teaching.
Children come from a variety of backgrounds with the majority coming from Christian homes. There is a wide range of socio-economic groupings and a number of solo-parent families. While we are based in Paeroa we have had children travel from Waihi, Waihi Beach, Katikati, Ngatea, Thames and Te Aroha. Travel subsidies are available for families outside of Paeroa and a bus service may be available depending on locality and number of students.
At our school we promote Christian values. We encourage students to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul and strength and to love their neighbour as themselves. This is evident around the school and is also a part of the focus of our bi-annual mission trip overseas for the year 7-8 students. Here students experience life in another culture and have the opportunity of serving in various ways. While the people we interact overseas appreciate our input probably the greatest benefit is the change in our own attitudes toward the people and needs of the world we live in.
We have a small preschool/playgroup called Rainbow Makers which is run by some of the parents a couple of days a week. This is a great opportunity for preschool children to socialize, learn and ready themselves for school.
Paeroa Christian School participates in many inter-school activities including the Science Fair, Music Festivals, Drama, Cross-Country, Swimming, Sports days and Speech Contests as part of our Ohinemuri and wider Christian School's cluster. We also participate in community activities such as the Christmas Parade and other events.
We actively encourage the involvement of parents in the school as we realise the education of your children is just as much your responsibility as it is ours. Our partnership, character and culture, along with the experience and skill of our staff will ensure that your child/children do develop to their full potential.
